I loved this show too. It aired on Nick when I was a little boy too. I’m young enough to have seen both versions of The Chipmunks and their recent movie. Genius. Just genius.
So the children could understand what they are saying.

The reason why theodore doesn’t know some stuff is because Theodore fell out of a tree at birth.
Like other people on here, I’ve noticed the chipmunks are talking kind of slow. Perhaps Ross Bagdasarian tried talking slow so that later, when he sped the voices up, it wouldn’t sound too fast. However, maybe he did it a little too slowly.
